Sunday’s Scrips: October 2026

Whatcha Up To?:

  • Just got back from annual Authors of the Flathead Writers Conference where I may have joined the board (More Below).
  • Creating a local writing group at my public library (More Below).
  • Work on the office continues (More Below).

Authors of the Flathead Writers Conference!

Authors of the Flathead is a lovely group of “writers helping writers” who put on a conference each year with truly phenomenal speakers like: Chris La Tray, Mark Sullivan, Deborah Magpie Earling, Shelley Read, and Michael Punke. I’m so very grateful to this group and all the effort they put into these conferences, so when they said they needed board members for 2026 – 2027 and they said there were five open positions, and they intimated that if no one spoke up the conference would disappear, and they said I could do it from home and not drive two hours to participate each month, I (finally) stepped up and volunteered to join the board.

Local Writing Group!

For several years, my local public library has asked me to start a writing group and I’ve resisted…which is perhaps to gentle a term. It’s more like I’ve thrown an adult tantrum complete with stomped foot. Until now. One of the (many) things I took away from the above conference is the fact that these little zoom groups I’ve been joining that gradually fall by the wayside simply aren’t cutting it. I need to commit not only to myself and my writing, but to other writers, and we all need to show up for one another consistently. And so, I’ve finally begun the creation of a local writing group which will begin meeting later this month.

The Office!

The office work, she continues…only I’m not the one doing it. Right now, the work needed is all metal fabrication and my Sweet Love has been working on it “in his spare time” of which there is none because we also finally broke down and decided to put in a whole-house generator this year (which isn’t as simple as it may sound). My poor husband’s time has been very much divided between regular property maintenance, preparation for winter, prepping the property for generator install (which includes moving a propane tank and retrenching lines), and occasionally working on my office. I can say, the roof no longer leaks!

This Wild Montana Writer’s Life: Conference Kick-Off

Today was day one of the Authors of the Flathead Writer’s Conference for 2026, a day I don’t usually go to because it means an extra night away from my family, an extra night in a hotel, and an extra day of extroverting: all of which take a toll.

But I had to come to the Friday Masterclass this year, because it was taught by Robert Petrone and it was all about first class POV and the Reflective Voice (basically writing memoir and including your grown-ass assessment of what happened then based on what you know now). In other words, it was a masterclass in what’s missing from the memoir I wrote a few years ago and called done until a bunch of other writers told me it wasn’t complete. And they’re right.

My memoir is all about what happened. It’s a lovely trip down memory lane. Just a story. Here’s what happened. Enjoy.

Apparently, the story does not a memoir make.

So I’ve spent the last year sulking and calling it something else.

I’ve spent the last year relying on obvious obstacles like child rearing and not having a space to call my own as reasons for not writing. And not really not writing, but not editing. Because there are two things missing from my totally complete and finished memoir: Reflective Voice and Editing.

That isn’t to say I haven’t spent the last year writing. I have been writing. But I’ve been writing in my head. I’ve been figuring out that I start the book in the wrong place. That if I start here and end here, there are lovely bookends. If I start here and then reflect back to here, it really allows the title to do more work. I’ve spent the last year trying to ignore the meaning behind what I wrote and why because I couldn’t stand the idea that I still had so much work to do on my life, on myself, on my book.

I wanted it all to be done.

Whoever said it’s not about the destination but the journey can kiss my frustrated patootey.

But the thing is, they’re right.

I was trying to take a short cut and that’s a cheat.

So…here I am. Back. Ready to do the work. Regardless of circumstances.

And I owe a lot of that to a woman I met at this years conference. She was only there for one day, this day, today. She was there to get what she needed and from the curiosity, wonder, and excitement she shared with me, she got everything she was looking for and more.

That was me several years ago. But I forgot. Or buried myself. Or allowed fear to take over.

But the thing is, there will always be reasons to stop, to come back to it later, to do this other thing now/instead. There’s only one reason to keep going, and it’s because I know what I needed and couldn’t find. I know what I still need, but haven’t voiced. I know there’s something left to uncover before I can move on to the next thing…the thing I already started but can’t make headway on either because this is still calling to me.

Fear will always be there. And the only way to lose, is to quit.

It turns out, I’m not ready to do either one.

Thank you to Robert Petrone. Thank you to Rachel. Thank you to Authors of the Flathead. And thank you to all of you. The people who believe in me when I forget myself for a moment, or a year.

Time to finish this conference, finish this book, and start the next thing. Was it Bob Dylan that said, “the only thing I knew how to do, was to keep on keepin’ on”? When I hear it, it’s the Indigo Girls singing it, so I no longer know.

ANYway, cheers to you! Cheers to us! Cheers to Conferences!

If you don’t want to have your world interrupted by ruminations often or at all, be sure to change your email settings; I don’t want to annoy you.

Thank you for being here. I appreciate you. I’m so grateful to you. And I can’t wait to continue this journey with you.

Sunday’s Scrips: September 2026

Whatcha Up To?:

Well, not much. See the entire literary community basically takes summers off, a tradition going back to when all the major publishing houses were in New York and all of New York fled the city in summer.

Also, many, many literary magazines are run by colleges who’s students leave for summer too. You may have noticed a monthly Rejections post didn’t go out for August. That’s because I didn’t have any. Not because I don’t have anything out on submission, but because when nobody’s reading, nobody’s rejection or accepting.

Somewhere along the way, people got savvy to the good thing they had going by taking summers off, and the tradition has continued ever since. Hence, summers are excruciatingly slow in the writer-verse. (This is also one of many reasons I don’t put out a July newsletter, there’s simply not much to report).

Now that everyone’s returning to school, to work, and to life, things will begin picking up again. In the meantime, there was a heart-felt piece (that also feels a bit tongue-in-cheek) published in Lit Mag News about rejections you may enjoy reading.

Sunday’s Scrips: August 2026

Whatcha Up To?:

This summer has not followed the rules:

  • My trailer-office is nowhere near ready, the unexpected findings taking much longer to correct than expected.
  • My afternoons of writing time have been nonexistent due to so many projects around the property requiring my husbands knowledgable hand and my watching of the children so he can do them.
  • We’ve had an unbelievable number of medical issues arise that have made everything unexpectedly complicated.

And none of this is meant as complaint or excuse. It simply is.

Life is naturally full of furious activity and lulls. I am attempting, daily and often times multiple times a day, to remind myself that this is simply a lull in my creative time. There is furious activity everywhere else, and so, a lull in creativity is required. I am still writing essays in my mind and occasionally stealing a moment to write bits of them down. One such moment of stolen time led to a mostly finished essay, and that essay has been picked up for publication with the completion of a few edits, the last one of which has been submitted and will hopefully now be accepted.

Things are happening against all odds, and this one acceptance could prove to be a major step. I’d be joining a publication that has published Roxane Gay, one of my literary heroines. So it’s no small feat.

Still, I try not to count my chickens before they’re hatched. I try to remember it’s just one publication, I try to remind myself this work, this job of creating and delivering to the world, is fraught with gatekeepers and demands ones best. Always.

I try to remind myself there have been no official acceptances since May, and this is due entirely to my schedule: my refusal to rise before 7am, my inability to garner enough restorative sleep to function on four hours of sleep as I’ve always done, my acceptance that afternoon writing time is on hiatus until the office is complete.

I content myself with getting the boys ready for another year of homeschool, with assisting them in finishing out the 4-H year which culminates in the County Fair at the end of this month, with organizing and reorganizing our home spaces to make them comfortable, accessible, constructive.

It is the fallow times, the lull times, that allow for a bursting and hyperactively productive time when the time allows. And I will content myself with this knowledge, with trusting in the ebb and flow, with putting faith in my tenacity and determination and the timing of all things being outside my control at the moment. I breathe. I will breathe. I force myself to breathe.

As always, thank you for being here. I hope you enjoy the monthly writing prompts, the monthly rejections, the publications in the Sanders County Ledger, and the videos (when I have the silence required to record them).

I hope you enjoy your summer as it comes to a close. I hope you have grand plans for the cooler months of fall and the excitement of Halloween and the tumble into family holidays that follow it.

Thank you for being here.

Weaving a Why

My little 100-word piece, or drabble, found a home in the Spring 2026 issue of Sheepshead Review. I love this little UW-Green Bay lit mag because they send me a copy of the issue (sometimes two!). They also hold an online launch party that’s always a blast as you get to hear other contributors to the issue read their work aloud. Check out the Spring Issue here.

Office Work is Never Done!

As you all (probably) know, I bought an adorable vintage camper trailer last winter and my Sweet Love, Jeff, and I have been working to get it turned into my office. Jeff spent considerable time and skill removing cabinets and the kitchen, capping plumbing and electric, and covering leaking skylights. Then he gave me the all-clear to get in there and remove the carpet and pad, which at 60 years old and used as a full-time home for someone for sometime, was *vomit* I’ve been sanding the plywood that was underneath to get the carpet pad glue and moldy bits removed so Kilz will have something to stick to, and in doing so discovered that even more cabinets had to come out *sigh* It’s fun though and exciting, and I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to move in by mid-to-late-June!

  • 400 Rejections! (More Below).

Prime Number Magazine

My latest piece, Home, published today in Prime Number Magazine, a Pushcart Prize-winning publication. Check it out here. The Pushcart is kind of a big deal, and if I ever win one, you will know it! LOL In the meantime, you can learn more about it here.

400 Rejections!

Since I first began submitting to literary magazines for publication in June 2023, I have garnered over 400 rejections! This is a hug accomplishment, for me, because it means I’ve been mostly-consistently writing, editing, and submitting for three years. Some of my acceptances never saw the light of the day as the publication went under after accepting, and I’ve had to roll that piece back into the submissions queue, while others have been rejected by an average-ordinary publication and then gone on to be accepted by an award-winning publication. There’s no real rhyme or reason and it truly does come down to luck of the draw. You happened to catch the right editor on the right day in the right mood. All in all, it’s been a hell of a ride so far, and I look forward to all to come.

The High Plains International Book Award is a prestigious award honoring books published in the previous year about the high plains area from USA to Canada. Volunteer readers determine which books become finalists and judges then determine which finalists win each award. There are several categories and it’s all very exciting! I’m reading now and winners will be announced in June.

Star Award Judge!

The Women’s Fiction Writers Association gives out a Star Award every year for general and debut novels, and I’ve been selected as a Judge for this years entries. I just finished up reading and sending in my extensive reviews. Winners will be announced in September.
